Travel Diary- Lake Bled

Morning Dolls,
Lake Bled has to be one of the most breath taking places I have ever visited. The photos do not do this place justice. This lake is hidden away in between Slovenian mountain, though it is popular among backpackers many other people have not even heard of this place before. For people who are after beautiful scenery, adventure sports or just looking to escape everyday life then you need to go here. Okay enough on trying to sell you this place, I’ll get to what we got up to on our trip there.
First off I am going to tell you a little story on what happened to us on our way from Budapest to Lake Bled, it ends with us being homeless for a night so trust me when I say you’ll want to read on. Hungarian transport let’s just say you can trust it. We started off from Budapest at 3pm and what should have been an eight hour train ride turned into us travelling all over Hungry and Croatia. We were on our first train no more than ten minutes when the ticked man, who might I add did not speak English came around showing us all a piece of paper saying they were fixing the train lines so we all had to get off the train and get on buses to take us to another station two hours away. It was annoying but we didn’t think more on it until we stopped in the middle of nowhere and we were all told to get off and cross tracks and get on a bus! Yup they did not even stop at a station! After more then two hours we get to the next train station where we all get back on a train where we were told it would be heading to Ljubljana (capital of Slovenia). However, it was only going as far Zagreb (capital of Croatia). By the time we got into Zagreb it was coming on 10 pm. No trains were running by then of course. We managed to get from the train station to the bus stain which are actually really far apart. One would think that they would be beside each other but no. Anyways we managed to catch the last bus that was going through Ljubljana. However by the time we got there it was 2 in the morning and no more buses ran to Bled till the morning. So to make a long story short we ended up setting up camp on the side of the street for the night. Not the most ideal situation. But, after a long night when we finally got on the bus the next day the song on the radio was “All ways look on the bright side of life”, yeah the irony. Apart from that incident, it is the only hiccup that we had our entire trip which isn’t too bad in the grand scale of things.

Now moving on to what we done once we got there. We got up and walked around the entire lake, now I’m not sure how long it is in kilometres but it took us just over an hour to walk around the entire thing. The whole walk is just amazing, the view is spectacular. We also went swimming later on.  You can rent a boat, go supping and do other kinds of water based activities in the lake. However, they don’t allow any motorised boats in the water so the sports are limited to what you can do on the lake. However the place is surrounded by gorges and canyons to satisfy any adrenaline junkies out there. There are a couple of different offices that arrange all these activities in the surrounding areas and there not hard to find. There is also Vintgar gorge that you can walk up to, well it’s a 5km hike but it is worth it! it is 3 euro to get into the gorge and after that it is about a 45 minute walk through it. But it is so worth it, your surroundings are just incredible. After that we decided to take a different route home, a hike up through a forest which ends with a pizzeria on top of a mountain overlooking the lake. It is really random I know but when can you ever say you walked through a forest following signs painted on random trees just to find a pizzeria? There is also tobogganing down the side of a massive hill which you can do, we actually did this and it was really fun. I did think I was going to go flying off it though. Once your there you also have to try some of there Bled cake which is amazing. The cake was invented there and you can get it in any of the restaurants around the lake. Oh and this may be bad news for my fellow coffee lovers but they don’t do Americanos there (they also do not do them in Croatia either) I asked for one twice in two different places and they had no clue what I was asking for. Other than that there is no down side to Bled.

Hope you enjoyed this post,
Emma x.
